Dunkin' Donuts Offers Almond Milk | Vegan Victory

Dunkin 'Donuts is rolling out almond milk as an option starting this week! This is exciting news for folks looking for a more compassionate (and healthy) option for their morning coffee.

At this time, there aren't any vegan donuts on the menu (their donuts contain eggs & dairy) but you can enjoy their bagels with your coffee.

Their plain, blueberry, garlic, salt, onion & sesame seed bagels are all vegan (here's the full list). Oh, and the hash browns are vegan, too!

Look for the "AM" label on their store locator to see if the location near you has almond milk on the menu.

The nearest location to me doesn't offer it yet but the one about 2 miles from there does. I'm not much of a coffee drinker, but I'm excited that my vegan friends on the go can enjoy almond milk in their coffee. I'm all about celebrating the progress and not trashing companies who aren't perfect.

Will this change make you consider drinking Dunkin' Donuts' coffee while on the go?

Eat, Sleep and Get Serenaded by Boyz II Men | Vegas Recap

I was in Vegas for my cousin's bachelorette trip and I did a lot of sleeping and a little eating.

Who goes to Vegas to sleep? I do! With 3 boys at home, my idea of vacation these days is moments of silence. lol Plus, I was having a wack week, so the timing of the trip wasn't the best.

Anywho, we caught some shows (including the Chippendales- guurrl! lol), rode on the High Roller and partied at a couple of night clubs.

I didn't eat nearly as much as I usually do because I was traveling with 8 other women and ummm, being the only vegan left me out of the meal planning mix. lol They were all about the seafood, burgers and wings on this trip! *sigh*

I ate a few salads, Nutter Butter cookies, peanuts and french fries, but I didn't care...you know being that I sipped on rum and caught up on some sleep.

My gut tells me that there's butter on that bread and NOT oil...I didn't notice until I looked at the picture

A couple of times I went to the food court in Paris Hotel and had vegan burgers and fries at Johnny Rockets. I ordered the Streamliner burger with a vegan Boca patty, grilled onions, lettuce, tomato, pickles & mustard.

I didn't notice until afterwards, but I think they toast their buns with butter. You may want to double check before placing your order.

I used to stan for Boyz II Men back in the day! We saw them perform at the Mirage hotel and they still got it!

During I'll Make to You, Wanya pulled me on stage and gave me a rose. lol

Good times!

On our last night, my mom suggested a Japanese restaurant hoping they would have more vegan options than the Italian one everyone else wanted to go to.

I ate an avocado roll, sesame seasonal vegetables & rice. I was surprised that there weren't many vegan options on the menu outside of these items and asparagus. The service was amazing though and the server tried to accommodate me the best she could. She knew the menu inside out and even the miso soup had animal products. Can you believe that?

This is definitely one of those times that I could see a new vegan feeling pressured to eat like everyone else. I had to ask the server so many questions because the most basic side dishes...like sweet potato puree and shiitake rice casserole had dairy. *sigh*

The food was fine but yeah, I was hungry afterwards. lol

It just wouldn't be Vegas without posting a picture of this.....

Ha!

How to Eat Vegan at Cookouts

It's that time of year again! Are you ready for sticky weather, beaches and going to every cookout looking like this....

.....because nothing on the table is vegan?

It's crazy how once you go vegan you realize just how much meat, dairy & eggs are in so many dishes while eating out.

I don't know about you, but after being vegan since 2010, I still feel awkward at cookouts.

I've accepted that I will probably never be 100% comfortable being vegan in social settings.

With that said, it does get a lot easier to navigate. You will get used to the awkwardness. lol

Here are 6 tips for your summer of cookouts...

*Eat before you go-This is a must if you're just starting out in a vegan lifestyle.  Your aunt's macaroni and cheese & grandmother's potato salad will be too tempting on an empty stomach.

*Eat after you leave-I'm the queen of hitting up Chipotle on the way home from any social event. You can also stash nuts, fruit, and seeds in your car to hold you over until you get home.

*Attack the fruit & vegetable tray-The potato salad, hamburgers, pasta salad (my fam usually has meat & cheese in theirs) and all the desserts at the cookout are likely not vegan. Fortunately, every cookout I've ever been to has a fruit and/or vegetable tray. I don't consider this a meal, but it will likely hold you over until you leave...especially if you ate before getting there. Also, snacking on fruit and vegetables helps with the uncomfortable feeling of not eating while everyone is.

*Bring a side dish or two -I've done this a few times and it usually goes pretty well. It's also a great conversation starter. Check out the recipes at the bottom of the post for ideas. Bring some vegan hotdogs (even the produce dept of the most basic grocery stores are starting to sell these) or veggie burgers and ask the host to toss them on the grill for you. Don't forget to bring a few extra to share because some may be curious about how they taste.

*Don't be shy-If you bring a dish, use this as an opportunity to educate your family on why you made the shift to a vegan diet.  Don't preach! Just chat with those who want to know more (and people will) in the most loving and fun way possible. Try not to get defensive when someone has a sly comment. It happens! *Sigh* Smile and enjoy your day.

*Try to see social events as an opportunity to connect...NOT eat-This is one that I'm still working on.  For most of us, cookouts are just as much about the food than spending time with family and friends.  Try to see these occasions as being more about connecting with family and friends and less about the food.  I know this is easier said than done but with practice it will get better.

Try some of these recipes:

What to toss on the grill: tofu kebabs, Field Roast or Tofurky sausage (try not to overcook because they will dry out), vegan hotdogs, and my favorite vegan burger is perfect on the grill.

Side dishes: super simple pasta salad, vegan version of the Neely's potato salad recipe, and kale salad

Desserts: strawberries stuffed with vegan cream cheese (use this vegan whipped cream if you can't find vegan cream cheese near you) and peach cobbler

These days I'm so blessed because most of my family members are accommodating when it comes to cookouts. They go above and beyond to make sure there's a meal for me (especially my parents)...things will get better. I promise. :-)

Vegan While Out: Chipotle Got Dat Tofu, Yo!

"Vegans & carnivores unite!" is the slogan Chipotle is using to promote their tofu sofritas.

I finally tried the sofritas bowl yesterday! I haven't been to Chipotle in months, so I didn't realize they started offering it outside of Cali (I remember when they were testing it out there several months ago).

I actually found out about it because my cousin in-law (who isn't a vegan) mentioned he lost weight on the what he calls the "sofritas & Subway diet." lol

Chipotle is using shredded organic tofu, then braising it with chipotle chilis, roasted poblanos and a blend of spices. This is an amazing meat substitute for families dabbling into meat-less life.

The texture is perfect! It's firm and has a serious bite like chicken. In fact, my boys said it reminded them of chicken. It's spicy and delicious!

Before sofritas, Chipotle was already very veg-friendly. My usual order is a bowl with black beans, fajitas, crack rice (you know that rice is crack! lol), guac, mild salsa and lettuce - so ordering sofritas was a nice change from that.

Will I order it again? Probably not. I loved the flavor and I'm sooo glad it's on the menu, but I don't like that Chipotle charges $2 for guac when you order sofritas. I'm used to guac being standard in my veggie bowl, so I refuse to pay extra for it. *Ye Shrug*

Anywho, I LOVE that tofu and vegan options as a whole are becoming more and more mainstream. :-)

See if sofritas are available in your area!

Have you had a chance to try it yet?

A Vegan Taste of NYC-Will Travel for Food

I went to NYC last weekend to attend their Veg Food Fest.  After standing in line outside for an hour (it took me back to the nightclub days) we sampled vegan treats from all over the city. I didn't take many pictures in the venue but it was cool to meet FullyRawKristina.

She's super sweet and down to earth. My girl, Monique was excited to meet her, too.

Sorry about the dim pictures...the lighting was very low in this restaurant

Afterwards, we met up with Michelle & a college friend of hers for green juice shots and appetizers at Quintessence in the east village. Monique heard great things about this place (I think she read reviews online) but the service was terrible and the food wasn't good. Umm, yeah. I swear they acted like we were bothering them by being there. Whatever!

V-Note

Afterward that we hopped in a cab and went to V-Note for dinner with one of our YouTube subscribers.  I'm sooo in love with this restaurant!! The ambiance. The food. The service. Amazing! A whole menu of vegan eats? We went in on that menu by ordering a little bit of everything. Everything. Everything. *in my Kat Williams voice*

appoverviewmarch2014.jpg

We decided to share all the dishes and for appetizers we had black-eyed peas cake, mushroom scallops & potato crisps, mushroom calamari and lentil rings. The lentil rings were my favorite!

vnotedinnernycmarch2014.jpg

Our main dishes were tofu "salmon", beet ravioli, creamy 3 mushroom risotto and crispy pine nut & basil seitan.  We also had sauteed spinach & quinoa as side dishes (not pictured). The beet ravioli was my favorite here.

Dessert- cheesecake, carrot cake & tiramisu-all 3 were my favorite. lol

Lots of laughter, conversation and even a lot of head turns when a lady walked into the restaurant wearing a fur coat. She only stayed for a few minutes but that was awkward.

Hotel Eats

This was my first time in NYC in over 10 years and I used the time to recharge by coming without Eric and the kids. Being in the city alone (I didn't meet up Monique & Michelle until Saturday) was definitely uncomfortable but I did it anyway.

hyatttimessquareveganmarch2014.jpg

I got a great deal at the Hyatt in Times Square (hey, Priceline!) and they took care of me by having vegan options (other than salad and a veggie burger) on the menu. Friday night I had vegan chili with quinoa and on Saturday I had a simple tofu scramble with toast. They actually had a huge vegan breakfast platter but I skipped it because I knew I would have food overload later. I was right. lol

Will I go to Veg Food Fest NYC again?

I had an awesome weekend but I doubt I will go to another Veg Fest in NYC. We paid $30 in advance to wait outside for an hour (Michelle decided not to wait in the long line) and I guess I was expecting more. Maybe DC has me spoiled (since we get more samples and there's no charge) with our Veg Fest.

Even though I don't plan to attend the fest again, I will definitely be back to NYC. I will always travel for food. :-)
