#7 WHY YOU SHOULDN'T GIVE A DAMN ABOUT YOUTUBE CHECKS | HERE'S WHAT YOU SHOULD FOCUS ON INSTEAD

thisbizlifepodcastcoverart.jpeg

Listen here…

I've been seeing a lot of YouTubers complain about their Adsense check being smaller than usual because YouTube isn't monetizing videos.

Some folks are even thinking about leaving the platform altogether.

As a content creator (and viewer), I think YouTube shouldn't be any creator's only source of income.

Here's what you can do instead of relying only on the Adsense check:

  • Sell your own products and services

  • Affiliate links

  • Sponsored videos

  • Use the YouTube platform to book offline opportunities

In this episode, I talk about how I was able to secure this opportunity, how to combat some of the overwhelm of getting ready for everything in 4 days (including getting my kids ready for an international trip), my struggle with insecurity, and why I will have to stay uncomfortable if I want to grow in life and business.

Listen here....

  • Always tap into my community for help

  • Always be ready, so I don't have to get ready

  • It goes down in the DMs...in a good way

#4 3 WAYS TO USE SOCIAL MEDIA TO BUILD YOUR BUSINESS

thisbizlifepodcastcoverart.jpeg

If you want to grow your business using social media, you can't just throw up random pictures. Your plan has to be more strategic than that. You should post what your audience wants to see and share it in a way that will allow you to educate and build that "know, like & trust" factor that is so important when you want to make sell products and/or services.

In this episode, I share 3 strategies you must do if you want to use social media to get paid.

Listen here...

The 3 strategies are:

  • Connection/Engagement - Be personable and use your social media to get to know your audience.

  • Build an email list - Ask your social media peeps to get on your email list, so they can connect with you on a more personal level and you have a chance to provide free and paid content.

  • Sell directly on your social media platforms -There should be a nice balance of free content and paid offerings. Don't be that person who is "only selling" because no one wants to be sold to all day. Live video on platforms like Instagram has been really helpful for my brand.

Resources mentioned in this episode:

Mailchimp - email service provider to collect emails to build your mailing list; offers a free account for up to 2,000 subscribers

#3 5 LESSONS I LEARNED FROM MY MOST SUCCESSFUL LAUNCH TO DATE

thisbizlifepodcastcoverart.jpeg

That moment when it's only January but it feels like April...

This month has been so productive and busy it feels much later in the year. It's crazy what can happen when you're intentional and focused with your goals.

I can't wait to see what the year brings for my brand and business!

I finally launched my self-paced course, Zero to Vegan on 1/23/17.

I'm saying finally because I thought about launching this course all of 2016. I taught it twice in a live workshop and knew it would be more effective with the content being laid out in a full course.

I chat about the lessons learned from that launch in episode #3 of the podcast.

Listen the episode here....

Recap of the 5 lessons...

  • Always put myself out there (no matter how ready I feel) I used to be the queen of focusing on what people thought. I'm still working on this.

  • Focus on the process not the results. My mantra for life!

  • Money is energy-- no matter how small the amount, being paid for your work is sooo amazing. Fortunately, this isn't the first time that I've been money from my Brown Vegan brand but the larger sum really made a difference.

  • Early mornings are magic - I talked about my morning routine in this post

  • All future launches will be a pre-sale - One of the main reasons I sat on this idea for so long, is because I was trying to make it "perfect." The thing is, you can never test your ideas without putting it into the world and allowing for feedback. Major lesson learned.

#2 WHY YOU DON'T NEED THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS TO GET STARTED WITH VIDEO

thisbizlifepodcastcoverart.jpeg

When I started my YouTube channel back in Oct 2011, I was obsessed with knowing what equipment other YouTubers were using to make their videos.

I would watch a video, fall in love with the production quality, then head over to the description box hoping to find out what camera, lighting and backdrop the person was using.

Most of the time, the awesome camera equipment, and lighting were out of my budget, but I thought I needed all of that to build a successful channel.

These days, I know being yourself and sharing valuable content is much more important than all the other things we care about in the beginning.

The good news is, you don't need to spend thousands of dollars to get started! Don't let equipment hold you back from starting your channel today.

Listen here....

3 ESSENTIALS TO START MAKING VIDEO TODAY:

phone.png

Camera - I started off with a $100 camera that I already owned to record my videos. If you don't have a camera, you can actually use the one right on your smartphone! Camera phone quality is getting better and better, so there's no reason to not use it.

  • Record video on your phone

  • Edit the footage using the iMovie app on your phone or transfer the file to your computer to edit and upload the video!

tripod.jpeg

Tripod - Wanna hear some funny? When I started my channel I didn't even have a tripod. I recruited Eric and the kids to hold the camera while I directed them where to move to get the shots. It was a mess! I just didn't know any better and assumed this is what everyone else did.

You can get a simple tripod for $20 (tiny one like this or full-sized similar to this one) and a tripod mount (for the full-sized tripod) to hold your phone in place (I have this one).

If a tripod isn't in the budget right now, you can also lean your phone against a stack of books.

naturallight.png

Natural Light - You don't need fancy light to get started - Natural light is actually best!

Film your videos in front of a window

  • The quality of your lighting is more important than a fancy camera

  • Face the light (don’t have your back to it) like the picture on the right

  • Cloudy days are usually better than sunny days because of shadows

Those are the basics to get started! Get out there and start sharing your passion with the world.

Never let equipment hold you back!  We all have to start from somewhere. :-)
