I’m so excited for today’s episode of the podcast because we’re back with my friend Plant-Based Tamika!

It’s been two years since she last caught up with us on the podcast and this conversation is long-overdue and full of amazing energy.

If you aren’t already familiar with Tamika, you have so much to gain from this episode and her story.

Before switching to a plant-based diet, Tamika suffered from severe asthma, battled sinus infections every winter and struggled to maintain a healthy weight.

After much frustration, time and energy spent with over the counter medications, doctor visits and more, Tamika decided to try a plant-based diet.

Since switching, Tamika has cured herself of asthma, shed over 40 lbs without feeling deprived and renewed her quality of life. She created her blog and social media platforms, Plant-based Tamika, to share her journey. Her fun, engaging content shows that a plant-based lifestyle is not a life of deprivation, but a life of abundance and joy.

Plant-Based Tamika has worked with countless vegan-friendly brands and restaurants to inspire others through her fun, authentic approach to this lifestyle. Tamika’s mission is to spread joy and inspire healing from the inside out.

Learn more about Tamika and the vegan lifestyle at www.plantbasedtamika.com.

We start off the conversation catching up on the wild ride of the past few years, finding out what Tamika has been up to, and reflecting on all the places she has been over the last year or so. Tamika shares her excitement over her brand new family home and we have a vulnerable and important conversation about her upbringing which included experiencing homelessness off and on from a very young age. She has so many lessons learned to share with you and hopefully inspires you to find your own ‘attitude of gratitude’.

Along with healing from a tumultuous past and relationship with her mother, Tamika has recently been called to experience solo travel for the first time which has opened her up to so many new experiences and perspectives. We talk about how this new adventure came to be and why it’s so important to do what you feel called to, even if it’s out of your comfort zone.

Beyond the personal stories, Tamika also brings so much to this conversation about business, being an influencer, creating her brand, and learning how to navigate brand partnerships.

In this episode we talk about:

  • Growing up experiencing homelessness, healing from generational trauma, and finding forgiveness

  • Using alcohol as a distraction from trauma, why Tamika decided to stop drinking, and her experience with that transition

  • Solo travel and the importance of doing what calls to you

  • Behind the scenes of Tamika’s amazing food reactions and video footage + tips for high quality content on Instagram

  • Some misconceptions of being an influencer + tips and tricks for navigating brand partnerships

  • Tamika’s Standout Style boutique and how she balances it with her content creation

  • Staying excited for the future without being attached to a plan

201. Happiness, Freedom & Mushrooms with Todd Anderson of Turnip Vegan

If you don’t already know Todd Anderson (@turnipvegan), then you’ll definitely want to listen to this podcast episode which is full of vegan advice, interesting stories, and new perspectives.

Todd L. Anderson AKA Turnip Vegan, lives in San Diego, CA and co-owns Spoiled Vegan Cafe. He has one son and two beautiful granddaughters and is a full-time content creator, recipe creator, and videographer. Todd is inspired by the next generation and the freedom to decide what we put in our bodies.

Todd has lived so many lives in his one life. He’s not only a content creator and recipe developer, but also a former hip hop artist, a part-time van lifer, and more. We start off the conversation talking about the idea that sparked the beginning of the opening of Spoiled Vegans Cafe (temporarily closed but will be opening again in a new location!). Todd shares his perspective on the vegan food scene in San Diego, and how it’s been great to see more restaurants with cultural influences opening. We also talk about the future of Spoiled Vegans, the plan to open up in a neighborhood that needs more plant-based options, and the exciting collaboration that will happen between the cafe and The Hamlet, a black-owned coffee shop in the area.

As you know from listening to the Brown Vegan Podcast, every single guest on the show has a different journey into veganism and different perspectives that come with it. I loved hearing about Todd’s 2-day Vegas hangover that ended up leading him accidentally into veganism. Todd tells me about the little moments throughout his life that over time allowed him to unlearn what he had been taught all of his life and start to take control of his food choices. You may have heard previous guests on the show talk about the one fact or thought that got to them and made them go vegan. Todd shares what it was that he heard that made him think completely differently about what he eats and why. The main reason he ended up going vegan? He felt he had been lied to by the food industry about what healthy eating really meant.

Todd has so much to say about finding happiness, being close to nature, and learning to grow into a life you love, and you’ll probably find some sort of inspiration throughout listening to this episode. It really has something for everyone.

In this podcast episode we talk about:

  • The start of Spoiled Vegans Cafe in San Diego, CA and how it all began with a Walmart waffle maker

  • How being a dog owner changed Todd’s perspective of why we eat some animals but not others

  • The freedom that comes with taking control of our food choices and unlearning the lies we’re fed by big industry

  • “If you can change what you eat, you can change your whole life.”

  • Part-time van life, being close to nature, and finding true self care

  • Challenging the idea that yoga, meditation, and veganism are ‘not for black people’

  • The excitement of VidCon

  • Content creation as storytelling and learning to tell a story in 15 seconds

  • Why relationship building is key to future opportunities and collaborations

  • Todd’s take on mock meats vs whole foods and why everyone needs to find their own path as a vegan

Emani Corcran of BLKANDVEGAN is on the podcast for a lively conversation all about the vegan lifestyle.

Emani Marie Corcran is a vegan recipe and lifestyle creator who caters to all people curious about expanding into the vegan lifestyle. She focuses on health and nutrition as a focal point in her creations, while creating delicious meals that will entice even the most notorious meat eater.

Not only this, she believes in inspiring her audience through action and sharing all health and wellness tips along the way. Her goal is to bring vegan food into the cultural conversation as a means to give veganism a fresh, modern, and flavorful turn from its previous past. She has a passion for curating a warm and welcoming environment that makes her page inclusive to everyone while explaining veganism from her African American perspective.

As I said, in this conversation we really cover so many great topics about living vegan, transitioning to a plant based diet, and exploring the motivations behind adopting a vegan lifestyle. If you’re a regular podcast listener who is curious about going vegan or if you are already a vegan and needing some new inspiration, Emani is definitely going to inspire you either way.

Emani went vegan overnight (a more rare strategy as listeners of this podcast will know!) after her boyfriend convinced her to watch What The Health on Netflix. She shares the story of how she put off the documentary for months because she knew it would make her change her lifestyle and she was resisting it. But after finally giving in to watch, she was convinced and immediately gave away the animal products in her kitchen to her roommates and headed to Trader Joes to stock up on vegan items. She tells me in this conversation about the original struggle of figuring out what vegans actually eat, how she learned to make a lentil taco which she relied on for months, and what she did to start veganizing her favorite foods. If you want inspiration for a vegan hot pocket, we’ve got it for you!

We talk about some of Emani’s favorite vegan meals and our differing snack preferences (let us know who you relate to more).

Of course, we also discuss work life, what the pandemic changed for Emani, and the surprising self care philosophy she’s adopted as a way to help her balance the stress of a full time career and her content creation.

This conversation has something for everybody and Emani’s energy is contagious.

In this episode we cover:

  • Finding self care practices that work for YOU

  • Balancing self discipline and down time as a business owner

  • Why What The Health is such a powerful vegan documentary and has something for everyone

  • The importance of finding your WHY as a vegan

  • The struggle of learning to cook tofu and why it’s now Emani’s favorite

  • The 85/15 rule for eating whole foods vs processed alternative meats

  • Beginner vegan tips and why having fun should be a part of your transition process

  • The best vegan snacks and chips discussion

  • A sneak peak of what’s to come for Emani’s upcoming cookbook

199. Flavors of the Caribbean and Getting Real About Living Vegan With Jenna Wends of Jenna’s Plant Base

Jenna is a content creator and recipe developer that makes Caribbean-style vegan food and eye-catching video recipes. She shares creative vegan meal ideas that reflect her Caribbean/Jamaican background.

If you follow Jenna on Instagram, you know that she creates high-energy, high-quality recipe videos with food that looks so good it will inspire you to get in the kitchen right away. During this conversation, she shares some behind the scenes of how she creates her content, what her process looks like, and how she manages life as a content creator. We also reflect on how working on vacation can be a challenge and what Jenna has done to make it work for her.

Jenna came from a LARGE family and began cooking at around age 7 everyday for her 18 other family members. Cooking everyday for that many people made the learning curve steep, and she had to quickly learn to take everybody’s feedback and make everyone happy. She shares more about that experience and how her background and upbringing still informs her recipe development and what flavors she loves to make vegan.

Going vegan was not something Jenna ever planned to do, but she found herself naturally wanting to eat less meat–maybe once a month or so. Over time, she started cooking more and more vegan meals because she found that was just what she preferred. In this podcast episode, you’ll hear how she was surprised herself to find that one day while eating seafood she decided she just didn’t want to eat it anymore, and how she began to eat exclusively plant based in 2020.

Some of her go to ingredients she loves in her high protein vegan diet? Chickpeas, tofu, and her latest obsession: jackfruit.

Coming from a previously meat-heavy diet and gradually transitioning to veganism, Jenna has some great tips for new vegans or people struggling to go vegan. If that’s you, you’ll love her realistic approach and practical strategies that she shares with me toward the end of the conversation. We also have a great conversation about plantbased vs vegan, and how Jenna has implemented a more vegan approach to aspects of her life outside of just food.

In this episode we cover:

  • Growing up with a large family and learning to cook from a young age

  • Managing life as a content creator, finding time for self care, and how to balance work with vacation time

  • What Jenna loves to eat as a high protein vegan

  • The method of cooking tofu that changed Jenna’s perspective

  • Veganism vs plant based

  • The process of veganizing different aspects of your life and how everyone’s life looks different

  • How Jenna’s large Caribbean/Jamaican family responded to her going vegan and whether or not they enjoy her vegan cooking

  • Transitioning to vegan from a heavy meat diet and how to safely increase calories with vegan foods

  • The importance of not being hard on yourself during your transition to veganism

  • Tips and unpopular opinions for new vegans
